Carbon Bike Wheelsets

Carbon Wheels for Every Ride. Built to Last.

HED has been building carbon bike wheels since 1984, with every rim engineered and hand-built at our Roseville, Minnesota facility. Every carbon wheelset in this collection is built around tubeless-ready construction, precision-laced spokes, and wind-tunnel testing that has defined HED's approach from the start.

Road, triathlon, or gravel, pick your discipline and pick your rim depth. Every wheel here is race-proven and covered by a 5-year warranty.

How HED Builds Carbon Bike Wheels

Every HED carbon rim starts in the wind tunnel, where rim depth, external width, and spoke count get tested with tubeless tires mounted and inflated to real-world pressures. That testing methodology matters because a rim's aerodynamic performance changes once a tire is seated. HED established this approach as an industry standard and still uses it on every new carbon wheelset that leaves the shop.

Inside the rim, wide internal rim widths across the Vanquish and Emporia lines improve tire fit and lower rolling resistance compared to narrower carbon rims running the same tubeless tires. Spokes are Sapim bladed for cleaner aerodynamics, hand-laced with even spoke tension for the lateral stiffness that holds up at high speeds. Hubs are paired with stainless steel bearings and fast-engaging internals for responsive pickup out of corners.

The HED Carbon Lineup: Road, Triathlon, and Gravel

For road racing and triathlon, the Vanquish and Vanquish Pro deliver HED's deepest rim heights, available from 45mm up to a full Aero Disc. The Jet RC series pairs a carbon aero fairing with an alloy rim base in both rim brake and disc brake versions, giving riders an accessible entry into carbon road wheels without giving up aerodynamic performance.

On gravel, the Stillwater G50 and Lancaster G25 bring HED's wide rim philosophy to carbon gravel wheelsets, with 28.5mm internal widths built for modern high-volume tubeless tires. Whether you're racing or exploring backroads, both wheels deliver the low weight and aerodynamic performance carbon is built for.

Carbon or Alloy: Why the Wheel Matters

Carbon wheels change how a bike rides. The low weight accelerates faster, the deeper rim profiles hold speed longer on flat and rolling terrain, and the stiffer carbon layup translates more of your power into forward motion. Riders upgrading from alloy wheels consistently notice the handling difference first, then the speed.

That said, carbon is not the right answer for every rider or every ride. If you're primarily focused on durability, training miles, or budget, alloy wheels like the Ardennes series still deliver strong aerodynamic performance at a lower price point. The full HED lineup is built to give you the right wheel for the ride, not just the most expensive one.

FAQs

What's the benefit of carbon wheels over alloy wheels?

Carbon wheels are lighter, stiffer, and allow for deeper rim profiles than aluminum construction, making them practical. That translates into faster acceleration, better speed retention on flats, and a more responsive feel under sprint or climbing loads. Riders moving from stock alloy wheels to HED carbon wheels consistently report easier riding at high speeds and a noticeable handling difference on long rides. Carbon also makes it possible to shape aerodynamic rim profiles that would be too heavy to build in alloy.

Are HED carbon wheels tubeless-ready?

Yes. Every carbon wheelset in HED's current lineup is tubeless-ready, with rim tape included in the box. Apply two layers if you received ivory rim tape, one layer if you received black rim tape. Deeper-section carbon wheels also ship with HED valve extenders or tubeless valves of the appropriate length for your rim depth.

How do I choose a rim depth for a carbon bike wheelset?

Rim depth selection comes down to your course, your weight, and the wind conditions you typically ride in. A 45mm deep-section rim is a strong all-around choice for road racing and triathlon, balancing aerodynamic performance with crosswind stability. Deeper profiles at 62mm and 82mm suit flat time trial and triathlon courses where maximum speed is the goal. If you climb regularly or ride in windy conditions, a shallower rim gives you more control against cross winds without giving up as much speed as riders often expect.

Do HED carbon wheels work with rim brakes?

Several carbon wheelsets in this collection are available for rim brake bikes. The Jet RC Performance Series and Jet RC Black Series both come in rim brake versions. The Vanquish, Vanquish Pro, Stillwater G50, and Lancaster G25 are disc brake only. If you're unsure which brake standard your bike uses, check your fork and rear dropout, or call (888) 246-3639 for help.

What tire width works best with HED carbon wheels?

Vanquish series wheels are wind tunnel optimized for 28mm tires (actual width). Jet series wheels are optimized for 25mm tires, though 28mm is also a solid option. HED's own testing puts the speed difference between 25mm and 28mm on a Jet at roughly 0.05 kph, or about 3 to 4 seconds over 40km. On gravel carbon wheels like the Stillwater and Lancaster, the 28.5mm internal rim width is built for 40 to 45mm tubeless tires. Drag differences between tire widths are minimal across the Vanquish line, so you have real flexibility without meaningfully affecting aerodynamic performance.

Do HED carbon wheelsets come with a warranty?

Yes. Every HED carbon wheel ships with a 5-year warranty covering manufacturing defects. Call (888) 246-3639 or contact the HED support team for warranty questions.
