Ardennes Series

The Original All-Road Wheel.

Long before all-road was a category, the HED Ardennes defined it. Named for the Belgian region where punchy climbs meet cobbles, the Ardennes is HED's aluminum road wheel, hand-built in Minnesota for more than 15 years. A wide alloy rim optimizes modern tires for better grip, lower rolling resistance, and a smoother ride. Pick your brake type and roll.

Why Ride Aluminum Bike Wheels

Aluminum wheels earn their place on price, braking, and serviceability. An aluminum rim gives rim brakes a machined braking surface that carbon cannot match, and an alloy wheelset costs a fraction of an expensive carbon wheel while giving up less performance than most riders expect. A deep carbon rim still wins on aerodynamics at high speeds, but for daily training, climbing, and rough pavement, low weight and ride quality matter more. Shallower alloy rims also stay calm in crosswinds, a real benefit for a lighter rider.

How HED Builds the Ardennes

The Ardennes uses a 25mm deep aluminum rim with a 21mm internal width, a shape HED validated in the wind tunnel. That width supports 25mm road tires up to all-road tires past 30mm. Every wheel is laced with Sapim J-bend spokes, then tensioned, trued, and inspected by hand in Roseville, Minnesota. Standard spokes and bearings keep the wheels easy to service for years of hard use.

Choosing Your Ardennes

The RA Pro is available in rim brake and disc brake versions and pairs Sapim spokes with HED's professional-grade Sonic 545 rear hub. The RA Performance brings the same rim to disc brake bikes at a lower price. The RA Black is the premium rim brake build. Disc models use centerlock rotors, and push-in end caps switch the front hub between 12mm and 15mm thru axles. Freehub body options cover Shimano, SRAM, and Campagnolo drivetrains.

FAQs

Are aluminum bike wheels worth it compared to carbon?

For a lot of riding, yes. Aluminum bike wheels cost far less than carbon, brake better on rim brake bikes, and hold up to daily miles on rough roads. Carbon fiber earns its price through aerodynamics and stiffness at race speeds. For training wheels, climbing, commuting, and rough roads, a well-built aluminum wheelset is the practical choice, and the Ardennes has been proving that for more than 15 years.

What is the difference between the Ardennes RA Pro and RA Performance?

Both use the same 25mm aluminum rim. The RA Pro is the higher spec build, with HED's Sonic 510 front and Sonic 545 rear hubs, and it comes in rim brake and disc brake versions. The RA Performance is disc brake only and runs a simpler hub at a lower price. The ride character is the same. Pick the Pro for the nicer hubs or the Performance for the value.

Are Ardennes wheels tubeless compatible?

Yes. Every Ardennes wheel is tubeless compatible, and rim tape is included with each wheel. Running tubeless removes the inner tube, which eliminates pinch flats and lets you run lower pressures for more grip. You can also run a standard clincher tire with a tube any time.

Do Ardennes wheels work with rim brakes or disc brakes?

Both. The RA Pro and RA Black are available for rim brake bikes with a machined aluminum brake track. The RA Pro and RA Performance cover disc brakes with centerlock rotor mounts. Check your frame and fork before ordering, and call HED at (888) 246-3639 if you are unsure which standard your bike uses.

What tire width works best with Ardennes wheels?

The 21mm internal width supports everything from standard road tires to all-road rubber past 30mm, and the wheels are wind tunnel optimized for 28mm tires (actual width). Wider tires at lower pressures are where the Ardennes shines, smoothing rough pavement without giving up speed.

Do Ardennes wheels come with a warranty?

Yes. Every HED wheel comes with a 5-year warranty covering manufacturing defects, and HED offers a crash replacement program if you damage your wheel in an accident. Questions about your specific situation can be directed to HED's team at (888) 246-3639 or through the contact page on the site.
