Disc brakes move the braking surface from the rim to a rotor at the hub. That gives you steady, predictable stopping in the wet and on long descents, where rim brakes fade and wear the rim over time. It also frees the rim to run wider tires with more clearance, which is why most modern road frames are built around disc brakes.
HED pairs that with the wide rims it helped pioneer in road cycling. Wider internal widths let a modern tire sit true, roll with lower rolling resistance, and corner with support. The result is more control and more speed from the same effort.
