Bike Wheel Compatibility Guide
Buying a new bicycle wheelset should make your bike faster, not create a compatibility problem.
Before choosing new wheels, it is important to confirm a few key details: wheel size, brake type, axle standard, freehub and cassette compatibility, tire size, rim width, tubeless compatibility, and available frame clearance.

Will HED Wheels Fit My Bike?
In most cases, matching a modern wheelset to a bike is straightforward once you know the standards used by your bicycle.
Start by identifying:
- Wheel diameter
- Disc brake or rim brake
- Front and rear axle dimensions
- Rotor mounting standard
- Freehub type
- Cassette type and drivetrain
- Tire width
- Frame and fork tire clearance
Do not choose a wheel based only on rim depth or appearance. Two wheels that both use a 700c rim can still use different hubs, axles, brakes, freehubs, and tire configurations.
Step 1: Check Your Bike Wheel Size
Wheel diameter is the first compatibility measurement to confirm.
Most modern performance road, triathlon, and gravel bikes use 700c wheels. Some gravel bikes and smaller-frame bicycles may use 650b wheels, while fat bikes and other specialty bicycles can use different wheel diameters.
The easiest place to start is your current tire. Look at the size printed on the sidewall.
A common road tire might be marked:
700 x 28c
A gravel tire might be marked:
700 x 40c
The first number identifies the general wheel size while the second identifies the nominal tire width.
Your replacement wheel must use a diameter compatible with your bicycle and tire setup.
Step 2: Disc Brake vs Rim Brake Wheels
Your braking system is one of the most important compatibility checks.
A disc brake bike uses brake rotors attached to the wheel hubs. A rim brake bike uses brake pads that contact a braking surface on the rim.
These wheel systems are fundamentally different.
If your bicycle uses disc brakes, choose a wheel designed for disc braking. If your bicycle uses rim brakes, choose a wheel with the appropriate rim brake surface and hub configuration.

Step 3: Check Your Front and Rear Axle Size
Your wheel hubs must match the axle standard used by your bike.
Modern performance road, gravel, and triathlon disc brake bikes commonly use thru axles. A common modern configuration is:
- Front: 12 x 100mm
- Rear: 12 x 142mm
The first measurement refers to axle diameter and the second refers to hub spacing.
Many current HED road and triathlon disc brake wheels use this 12 x 100mm front and 12 x 142mm rear configuration.
Older bicycles can use different standards, including quick-release systems or other thru-axle dimensions. Do not assume that every disc brake bicycle uses the same axle standard.
If you are uncertain, check your bicycle manufacturer's specifications or measure the existing hub and axle before ordering.
Step 4: Check Your Disc Brake Rotor Mount
If your bicycle uses disc brakes, the rotor also needs to mount correctly to the new hub.
The two common bicycle disc rotor interfaces are:
- Centerlock
- 6-bolt
Many current HED road, gravel, and triathlon wheels use Centerlock hubs.
Centerlock rotors attach using a central splined interface and lockring. Six-bolt rotors attach to the hub using six individual bolts.
Before purchasing a wheelset, confirm which rotor standard your existing rotors use and which interface is provided by the new wheel.
In many cases riders upgrading wheels also move their existing rotors to the new wheelset, making this an important compatibility check before installation.
Step 5: Choose the Correct Freehub
The freehub is the splined body on the rear wheel that supports the cassette.
Choosing the correct freehub is essential because different drivetrain systems use different cassette interfaces.
Common freehub standards found on modern performance bicycles include:
- Shimano / SRAM HG
- SRAM XDR
- SRAM XD
- Shimano Micro Spline
- Campagnolo N3W
The correct option depends on your drivetrain and cassette rather than the bicycle frame itself.
Shimano HG Freehub Compatibility
Shimano HG is one of the most widely used freehub standards in road cycling and has also been used by many SRAM drivetrains.
If your bike currently uses a Shimano-compatible road cassette, there is a good chance it uses an HG-style freehub, although cassette generation and drivetrain specifications should always be confirmed before ordering.
SRAM XDR Freehub Compatibility
SRAM XDR is commonly used with modern SRAM AXS road drivetrains.
If your bicycle uses a SRAM road cassette designed for XDR, select the SRAM XDR freehub option when available for your HED rear wheel.
XDR and traditional Shimano HG freehubs are different interfaces, so the correct freehub should be selected for your cassette.
SRAM XD vs SRAM XDR
SRAM XD and SRAM XDR sound similar but are not the same application.
XD is widely associated with mountain bike and certain off-road drivetrains, while XDR was developed for road-oriented SRAM drivetrain applications.
HED offers different freehub options across different hub families, so select the freehub based on both your drivetrain and the specific HED hub.
Campagnolo Freehub Compatibility
Riders using Campagnolo drivetrains should pay particular attention to cassette and freehub compatibility.
Current HED hub options may include Campagnolo N3W depending on the wheel and hub configuration.
Campagnolo cassette dimensions and lockring requirements can vary, so verify the cassette model and current HED product specifications before ordering.
HED Replacement Freehubs Must Match the Hub
Freehub compatibility does not stop at choosing Shimano, SRAM, or Campagnolo.
The replacement freehub must also match the HED hub design already installed on the wheel.
HED has used different hub systems over time, including different pawl-count configurations and newer ratchet-based designs. Freehub bodies designed for one HED hub family are not automatically compatible with another.
If you are replacing a freehub on an existing wheel, identify the wheel model, approximate production year, and hub type before purchasing the replacement.

Step 6: Check Tire Compatibility
Wheel compatibility also depends on the tire.
A tire must be appropriate for the rim diameter, internal rim width, tire retention design, intended use, and pressure limits of the wheel.
Tire width is particularly important because the same labeled tire can measure differently when installed on rims with different internal widths.
A tire mounted to a wider rim will often measure wider than the same tire mounted to a narrower rim.
That means changing wheels can also change the actual width of your tire and the amount of clearance available inside the frame.
What Tire Size Is Best for HED Road Wheels?
Tire choice should always be matched to the individual wheel, riding conditions, and bicycle clearance.
Many modern HED road wheel platforms are designed around wider performance road tires.
Vanquish wheels, for example, use a 22.4mm internal rim width and are optimized around a 28mm tire.
The goal is not simply to install the widest tire possible. Rim width and tire width should complement one another so the tire achieves an appropriate shape for handling, comfort, rolling performance, and aerodynamics.

What Tire Size Is Best for Gravel Wheels?
Gravel tires are significantly wider than typical performance road tires and are often ridden at lower pressures.
Wider internal rims help support those larger tires and can create a more stable tire shape during cornering and riding over rough surfaces.
HED gravel wheels use rim widths designed around modern gravel tires, but riders should still verify the recommended tire range for the individual wheel before installation.
Tire choice should account for terrain, rider weight, pressure, tread pattern, frame clearance, and intended use.

Step 7: Measure Frame and Fork Clearance
A tire fitting the wheel does not automatically mean the tire will fit the bicycle.
You also need sufficient clearance between the installed tire and the:
- Fork legs
- Fork crown
- Chainstays
- Seatstays
- Brake bridge where applicable
- Frame or fork surfaces surrounding the tire
This becomes especially important when moving from a narrow rim to a wider modern wheel.
A wider rim can increase the measured width of the installed tire, even when the number printed on the tire sidewall has not changed.
Measure actual tire width and available bicycle clearance rather than relying solely on the labeled tire size.
How Much Tire Clearance Do I Need?
Tire clearance should provide enough room for normal wheel and frame movement, manufacturing variation, debris, and changes in actual tire size.
HED recommends maintaining adequate clearance around the tire rather than installing a tire that only barely fits between the frame or fork.
Gravel bikes generally require additional practical clearance because mud, dirt, rocks, and debris can collect around the tire.
When in doubt, follow the bicycle manufacturer's tire-clearance recommendations.
Step 8: Tubeless vs Inner Tubes
Modern HED wheels are designed with tubeless compatibility across the current wheel lineup.
A tubeless setup allows a compatible tire to operate without a conventional inner tube when properly installed with the required rim tape, valve, and sealant.
Many HED wheels can also be used with compatible clincher tires and inner tubes.
Always follow the tire and wheel manufacturer's installation instructions and pressure limits.
Do HED Wheels Need Tubeless Rim Tape?
HED road and gravel wheels require the appropriate tubeless rim tape for a tubeless setup.
Some HED wheels ship with tape already installed, while others include the tape with the wheel. Follow the instructions provided with the individual wheel because tape requirements can vary.
Older HED products can also differ from the current lineup, so do not assume that every older HED rim is tubeless compatible.
Step 9: Check Maximum Tire Pressure
Every rim and tire system has pressure limitations.
Never assume that a pressure used on an older narrow road rim is appropriate for a modern wide wheel and tire combination.
Wider tires generally allow riders to achieve efficient rolling and comfort at lower pressures than were traditionally used with narrow road tires.
Always use the lowest maximum pressure specified by the wheel, tire, and applicable system components.

Does Rim Width Change Tire Width?
Yes.
Internal rim width affects the shape of an installed tire. Mounting the same tire to a wider rim can increase its actual measured width and alter its profile.
This is one reason HED recommends considering the wheel and tire together as a complete system.
It also means you should reconsider frame clearance whenever changing to a wheel with a substantially different internal rim width.
Can I Put Road Wheels on a Gravel Bike?
Sometimes, provided the bicycle and wheel share compatible axle, brake, wheel-size, freehub, tire, and frame-clearance standards.
The more important question is whether the wheel and tire combination is appropriate for the way the bicycle will be ridden.
A road-focused wheel may physically fit a gravel bike, but rim width, tire support, intended use, and durability should also be considered before using it on rough terrain.
Can I Put Gravel Wheels on a Road Bike?
A compatible 700c gravel wheel may physically fit some modern disc brake road bikes, but tire and frame clearance often become the limiting factors.
Wider gravel rims and tires may exceed the clearance available in a road-oriented frame or fork.
Confirm actual installed tire width and bicycle clearance before riding.
Can I Use Different Front and Rear Wheel Depths?
Yes. Front and rear wheel depths do not need to match.
Road racers and triathletes frequently choose different depths to balance aerodynamic performance and handling.
A rider might pair a shallower front wheel with a deeper rear wheel or use a deep-section front wheel with a full rear aero disc.
Wheel depth itself does not determine axle or drivetrain compatibility, but each wheel still needs to meet the standards required by the bicycle.

Bike Wheel Compatibility Checklist
Before ordering new bicycle wheels, confirm all of the following:
- Wheel size: 700c, 650b, 26-inch, 27.5-inch, or another required standard.
- Brake type: Disc brake or rim brake.
- Axle size: Confirm both front and rear hub dimensions.
- Rotor interface: Centerlock or 6-bolt for disc brake bikes.
- Freehub: Shimano HG, SRAM XDR, XD, Micro Spline, Campagnolo, or another required system.
- Cassette: Confirm that the cassette matches the selected freehub.
- Tire size: Make sure the tire is appropriate for the rim and intended use.
- Frame clearance: Check the actual installed tire width, not only the labeled size.
- Tubeless compatibility: Verify wheel, tire, rim tape, valve, and setup requirements.
- Tire pressure: Follow the limits specified for the individual wheel and tire.
