Why the Valve Matters in a Tubeless Setup
A tubeless system is only as good as its seal, and on tubeless wheels the valve stem is one of two places air can escape. HED's tubeless valve uses an alloy body with a rubber grommet at the base that seats into the valve hole and holds a tight seal against the rim bed, even at road tire pressure. A valve cap keeps dirt out of the core between rides. The removable valve core makes sealant installation clean: pull the core with a valve core remover, add tubeless sealant through the valve, and thread the core back in. Removing the core also gives you maximum airflow from the pump, which helps snap a stubborn tire bead into place during setup.
Match Valve Length to Rim Depth
The valve has to clear the rim with enough exposed stem to attach a pump head. That is why HED offers five lengths, from 37mm for shallow fat bike rims up to 110mm for deep carbon fiber rims like the Vanquish 84 and Jet 9. What is a tubeless valve stem?
A tubeless valve stem is a standalone presta valve that mounts directly through the rim's valve hole, doing the job the valve on an inner tube does in a standard setup. A rubber base seals it against the rim bed so air only moves through the valve itself. Road and performance rims are drilled for presta valves, not wider Schrader valves, and HED valves follow that standard, taking the same pump head as a traditional presta valve.
How do I choose the right valve stem length?
Match the valve to your rim depth using the guide on this page. The stem needs to clear the rim far enough to attach a pump head, so when your rim depth falls between two options, pick the longer valve. If you are setting up a new bike and unsure of your rim depth, check your wheel's product page or call HED at (888) 246-3639.
Does the HED tubeless valve have a removable core?
Yes. The removable valve core is what makes tubeless maintenance manageable. Pull the core with a valve core removal tool for easy sealant installation without unseating the tire bead, to refresh sealant every few months, or to get full airflow when seating a tire. Sealant can clog a valve core over time, and a replaceable core means you swap a small part instead of the whole valve.
Do these valves work with non-HED rims?
HED tubeless valve stems are designed and tested for HED tubeless-ready rims, and the length guide maps directly to HED wheel models. The valve uses a standard presta valve hole, so fit on other tubeless compatible rims comes down to rim depth and valve hole shape. Call HED before ordering if you are running a mixed setup.
Why is my tubeless tire losing air at the valve?
A slow leak at the valve usually means the base grommet is not seated firmly, the valve nut has loosened, or sealant has dried inside the core. Snug the nut by hand, check that the grommet sits flat against the rim bed, and clean or replace the valve core. A valve in good condition holds tire pressure as reliably as the tire bead itself, and swapping a worn valve is cheaper than chasing a mystery flat tire.
What length valve do I need for HED disc wheels?
Full disc wheels and the deepest aero rims exceed what any standard valve can span. For those setups, HED valve extenders thread onto the valve to add the reach a deep rim requires. If you ride a Vanquish V Disc, Jet 180, or an aero disc wheel, check your wheel's included hardware first, since HED ships deeper wheels with the correct valves or extenders in the box.
