This one came together over more than a few helpings of tater tot hot dish. Since HED Cycling Products was launched in 1984, we have taken pride in being distinctly Minnesotan, from creating and building our wheels here to consistently braving blizzard-level commutes. If you’ve ridden HED wheels, you’ve experienced a bit of what we love about L’etoile du Nord. In that spirit, our team started preparing for this year’s fat bike season with a couple ‘what ifs’. What if we took HED’s industry-leading one-piece, full-carbon fat bike rims and paired them up with other industry-leading Minnesotan brands? What if we made a fat bike wheel that was entirely produced and built right here in the Twin Cities? So we made a couple calls. We got on the phone with our friends at Onyx Racing Products and Berd Spokes, and pitched them on the idea.

 

The result? Something stellar . . .    HED’s Made in Minnesota (limited edition) fat bike wheels have received the full custom treatment, featuring “Black Aura” Onyx hubs with an incredible color-shifting finish and HED logo decals that capture all the vibrancy of the Northern Lights. On top of that, Berd Spokes has supplied what they are known for: the lightest bike spokes in the world. Berd’s black PolyLight spokes tie the whole piece together, resulting in a wheel that is equally swift and exquisite. Available in both Big Deal (26″) and Big Half Deal (27.5″), HED’s Made in Minnesota (limited edition) wheels utilize the same ribbed, single-wall design as fat bike wheels throughout HED’s lineup, which maximizes stiffness and minimizes rotational weight. These wheels are entirely tubeless compatible, featuring a tire bed that does not require rim tape. That’s right. No rim tape required. All of HED’s fat bike wheels utilize Inflatobam, HED’s patented tubeless technology for installing fat bike tires. The twin channel rim design provides a better pre-inflation seal by trapping each tire bead against the rim. This drastically reduces the amount of air it takes to get the beads to “bam” into place. In conjunction with the rim shape, Inflatobam utilizes Inflatobands. These effectively provide a variable rim-channel diameter. This compensates for the discrepancies in tire bead diameters by minimizing the gap between the tire and the rim channels (the main source of air leaks). Once seated, the angled bead shelf prevents the tire from collapsing back into the rim at low pressure.
