How HED Builds Bike Wheels

Every bike wheel that leaves our Roseville, Minnesota facility is hand-laced to a HED hub with stainless steel spokes, then trued and tensioned by hand, the same way HED has built wheels since 1984. That hands-on build separates HED's bike wheels from machine-built bicycle wheels and shows up in even spoke tension, true-running rims, and bearings that spin freely from the first ride.

Construction varies by series. Vanquish and Stillwater G50 use full carbon rims. The Jet Series bonds a carbon fiber overlay to an aluminum alloy rim base. The Ardennes runs full aluminum, built on Sonic hubs with steel axle hardware sized for road and gravel loads.

BELGIUM R RIM BRAKE (700C) - HED Cycling Products

Disc Brake vs. Rim Brake Bike Wheels

Disc brake wheels and rim brake wheels are built around different demands. A rim brake wheel uses the rim as the braking surface, so the rim has to be machined for brake pads and laced to handle caliper forces at both the front wheel and rear wheel. A disc brake wheel moves braking to a rotor at the hub, freeing the rim to be shaped purely for aerodynamics, weight, and strength.

HED builds high-quality wheels for both standards. The Vanquish is a disc brake only. The Jet RC Series ships with a rim brake or disc brake. The Ardennes is available in both. Not sure which standard your bike uses? Call HED at (888) 246-3639.

Carbon, Aluminum, and Tubeless Tech

A carbon rim cuts weight and lets HED shape deeper aero profiles for speed, the same approach behind HED's full lineup of aero bike wheels. Both have their place, which is why HED still builds carbon wheels, aluminum wheels, and hybrid designs that pair a carbon fiber overlay with an alloy rim base. Wider rim widths are now standard across the lineup, giving modern tires the right shape to seat and roll.

Tubeless-ready rims are standard across HED's road bike wheel and gravel lineup, letting road cyclists run lower pressures for better grip and lower rolling resistance. Every tubeless-ready bike wheel ships with factory-applied rim tape.

FAQs

What is the difference between disc brake and rim brake bike wheels?

Disc brake bike wheels move braking to a rotor at the hub, while rim brake wheels use the rim itself as the braking surface. Disc brake wheels generally allow for lighter rim construction, wider tire fit, and a wider rim profile because the rim is not constrained by brake pad geometry. Rim brake wheels are proven on the road, work with rim brake bikes already in your garage, and remain a strong choice for riders who do not want to change their entire braking setup. HED builds both.

Are HED bike wheels tubeless-ready?

Yes. Every wheel in HED's current road, gravel, and triathlon lineup is tubeless-ready. Rim tape is applied at the factory. Apply two layers if you received ivory tape, one layer if you received black tape. Tubeless valves or valve extenders are included with deeper-section carbon wheels.

What is the difference between carbon and aluminum bike wheels?

Carbon bike wheels are lighter, stiffer, and easier to shape into aerodynamic rim profiles than aluminum wheels. That translates to weight savings, lower rotational mass, and better aero. Aluminum wheels are more affordable and easier to repair after impacts, which is why HED still builds the Ardennes as a full aluminum wheel. For a deeper breakdown of cost, weight, comfort, and durability, read our guide on carbon vs aluminum bikes.

What size bike wheels does HED make?

HED builds road bike wheels, triathlon wheels, and gravel wheels in 700c. Some gravel wheels are also available in 650b. Fat bike wheelsets are built around fat tire compatibility, with sizing matched to fat bike frames. If you are unsure which wheel size your bike takes, check the existing tire sidewall for the size marking, or contact HED.

Do HED bike wheels work for road, gravel, and fat bikes?

Yes. HED's lineup covers road bike wheels, gravel wheels, fat bike wheels, triathlon wheels, and track wheels. Each style is built around the tire type, terrain, and forces that kind of riding puts on the wheel. Browse by tech to find disc brake, rim brake, tubeless-ready, or deep-section options.
