AERO DISC WHEELS
HED aero disc wheels are built for triathletes and time trial riders chasing every aerodynamic advantage on race day. The solid disc cover replaces the open spoke pattern of a traditional rear wheel, cutting aerodynamic drag and turning clean airflow into real speed on flat and rolling courses. Handbuilt in Roseville, Minnesota, and trusted by world-class athletes, every aero disc in this lineup is engineered for stiffness, power transfer, and compatibility with modern drivetrains.

Model Overview
-
Jet RCD Pro (Disc Brake): Alloy rim with a carbon fairing, built for disc brake bikes. Fast, stable, and ready for modern drivetrains.
-
Jet RCD Black (Rim Brake): Rim brake only with a premium textured braking surface for better control. Sleek, matte finish.
-
Jet RCD Performance (Rim Brake): Classic rim brake style. Durable, aero, and ideal as a training wheel or race-day setup.
- Vanquish Pro (Disc Brake): HED's top-end carbon fiber disc. Full carbon construction for maximum aerodynamic performance. Pure race-day speed.

- For all types of bicycle wheels, a hard strike on the rim is likely to result in rim damage. At the point of impact, an aluminum rim will dent, and a carbon rim may delaminate. Both are unsafe conditions that require rim replacement.
- Tire pressure = 75psi MAX
- We do NOT recommend hanging a bike equipped with Vanquish or Jet wheels from hooks. This can damage the carbon skin and will not be covered under warranty.
- Tubeless Tape (applied from the factory)
- Valve hole decals x4
- Tubeless valve (Vanquish only)
- Skewer for quick-release axle (rim brake only)

What Makes a Disc Wheel Different
A rear disc wheel replaces the open spoke pattern of a traditional wheel with a solid disc cover, and that one design change is responsible for a real aerodynamic advantage at race speeds. Spokes turning through the wind create turbulence and aerodynamic drag. A disc cover keeps airflow clean, cutting air resistance behind the bike where it matters most on a flat time trial or triathlon course.
The solid form also makes the wheel stiffer than a spoked rear wheel, which translates into more direct power transfer when you put down watts and a more responsive feel out of corners or during a hard effort.
How HED Builds an Aero Disc for Race Day
Every HED aero disc starts with a rim profile validated in the wind tunnel with tires mounted and inflated to real-world pressures. That testing methodology matters because a rim's aerodynamic performance changes once a tire is seated, and HED established this approach as an industry standard.
From there, the wheel is hand-built at our Roseville, Minnesota facility with even spoke tension, a HED Pro 5-pawl hub, and a disc cover engineered to cut aerodynamic drag without sacrificing stiffness. The Vanquish Pro takes it further with full carbon fiber construction and a 22.5mm internal rim width for the best performance with modern, wider tires.
faqs
An aero disc wheel is built for race day on flat or rolling courses, specifically triathlon, time trial, and pursuit-style events where sustained speed matters more than climbing or technical handling. On windy days, the solid disc cover can catch crosswinds more than a spoked wheel, so most riders pair the rear disc with a shallower front wheel for better front-end control. For everyday training or hilly group rides, a shallower Jet or Vanquish wheel is usually the better call.
It comes down to your brake standard, your bike, and how much performance you want from the wheel. The Vanquish Pro is HED's fastest aero disc wheel, built with full carbon fiber construction for maximum aerodynamic performance on disc brake bikes. The Jet RCD Pro pairs a carbon fairing with an alloy rim base for excellent durability on disc brake setups at a lower price point. The Jet RCD Black and Jet RCD Performance are rim brake only, making them the right choice for riders on older rim brake triathlon or time trial bikes. If you're unsure which brake standard your bike uses, check your fork and rear dropout, or contact customer service at (888) 246-3639.
Yes. Every aero disc wheel in this lineup is tubeless compatible, with tubeless tape applied from the factory for straightforward tubeless installation. The Vanquish Pro ships with a tubeless valve included. Rim brake models include a skewer for quick-release axle compatibility, and all models come with four valve hole decals to seal unused spoke holes on the disc cover.
The Jet series is optimized for 25mm tires, though 28mm also works well. The Vanquish Pro is wind tunnel optimized for 28mm tires based on its 22.5mm internal rim width, which gives modern, wider tires the right shape on the rim for lower rolling resistance. In general, a tire size that matches the inner width of the rim is going to give you the best performance. Drag differences between tire widths are minimal across HED's aero lineup, so you have real flexibility without meaningfully affecting aerodynamic performance.
Every aero disc wheel in this lineup uses standard alloy freehub bodies in Shimano HG, SRAM XDR, and Campagnolo N3W to match modern drivetrains. Select your freehub type at checkout based on your cassette and groupset.
A disc wheel is inherently stiffer than a spoked rear wheel because the continuous disc cover adds torsional rigidity between the hub and rim. That extra stiffness translates into more direct power transfer when you put down watts, which is part of why disc rear wheels feel so responsive out of corners or during hard efforts on a time trial course. The hub, spoke tension, and carbon layup all contribute to that feel, and every HED aero disc is laced and trued by hand in Roseville to the same spec.
