The Beginning: A Garage, A Vision, A Disc Wheel
HED Cycling was founded in 1984, when Steve Hed built his first carbon disc wheel in a Minnesota garage.
He noticed a lack of high-performance aerodynamic gear and began experimenting with shapes and materials to reduce drag. What started as a passion project quickly caught the attention of elite cyclists and triathletes. That single wheel became the foundation of a brand that would change cycling forever.

Watch: The Story Behind HED Cycling
This 2-minute video captures the spirit of HED Cycling: from Steve Hed’s garage beginnings to our continued legacy of innovation and speed.
Innovation That Changed the Industry
HED pioneered deep-section carbon wheels in the U.S., with the Jet series becoming a go-to choice for time trials, Ironman triathlons, and high-speed track events.
We were also early innovators in:
-
Aerodynamic rim shaping
-
Wide rim widths for lowered rolling resistance
-
Wind tunnel testing with mounted tires: now an industry standard
Today, much of what defines modern aerodynamic wheel design can be traced back to HED’s innovations.

Champions on HED Wheels
HED wheels have carried riders to the podium at the Tour De France, and beyond:
From pro triathletes to time trial specialists, elite cyclists have trusted HED when it mattered most.
But performance isn’t reserved for pros: HED wheels are built for any cyclist chasing speed, confidence, and performance.

Built by Hand. Still in Minnesota.
To this day, HED wheels are hand-built in Minnesota by a skilled team of wheel builders. Unlike many brands, HED has chosen not to outsource carbon rim production. Every wheel reflects the hands-on craftsmanship and commitment that defined HED's mission from the very start.
Some of HED's current staff were trained directly by Steve Hed himself.
Carrying the Legacy Forward
After Steve Hed’s passing in 2014, his wife and co-founder Anne Hed stepped into the role of CEO, continuing the brand’s legacy with strength and vision.
Under her leadership, HED has:
- Expanded into new categories like gravel
- Developed industry-defining wheels including the Vanquish Pro and Jet 180
- Strengthened in-house manufacturing and capacity
Anne’s leadership has preserved what makes HED special and pushed it even further.
Today, she is joined by her son, Andrew Hed, who brings a new generation of innovation, energy, and vision to the company.
